CrossLang was awarded a grant by the IWT (Flemish government agency for the promotion of innovation through science and technology) to investigate and build an MT production platform. The focus of the project is on leveraging existing NLP (Natural Language Processing) components and reducing hybrid MT engine production time for less-studied language pairs.
Future users of the solution will be able to easily integrate it with existing, state-of-the-art NLP components and focus on translation production instead of on experimenting and plumbing code. Simultaneously, the CrossLang Gateway will be extended to serve as a multiplexer for the combination of MT systems.
The project will be validated by creating a Dutch-French (bi-directional) MT system which can be adapted to produce a series of optimised domain-specific systems.
A full-fledged test bench will provide instant automatic quality evaluation on a fine-grained level. Feature scores can be combined to provide explanatory results, as opposed to just metric scores.
